I recent bought a guitar speaker cabinet off of eBay.

Kinda expensive, but touted to be quite exceptional.

So, finally it arrived, but I wasn't that interested. I just bought it because I had to suss-out some equipment issues, and felt like I had to at least give all the amp-heads their due (that'll make sense to BoDiddley, though probably not most else).

So finally, I opened the box, plugged the speaker cabinet in to my favorite amp, and....

was blown away.....

Like everything I'd ever hoped for was there. It took my music, my touch, my amp, and made it better. It elucidated everything I was saying (musically) in a much better way. It takes my mistakes, and smooths them. Takes my good attibutes, and amplifies them.

I haven't smiled so much in years....

I just want to play guitar all day now. That's a cool feeling.

Interesting evening.

Goodbye party for a very old and dear friend. He's leaving for medical school. Had a band there. Band of another old friend who married this guitarist. Used to play with Leon Russell, Maria Muldaur, and a host of others.

Band was excellent, guitarist was insane. I wss thinking to sit in early on, but realized that I had nothing to offer. Nothing compared to this guy.

Got to talking shop with the guitarist, and upon demand of the girls, I was to play and sing "My Way" to bid off the departers. So, I started playing piano and singing, and the guitarist, John, joined in. We got a bit crazy and improvised some lyrics, segued into a few songs, and made a parody of it.

At the end, he said "hey, I enjoyed talking shop with you, you understood everything I said, and we could make a future out of that My Way parody...we definitely need to hang out, share a few licks." Joke of course on the "we could make a future" thing. But he was serious about wanting to hang out.

Now this might not seem like a big deal. But this guy has credentials flowing from his posterior. And, more important....is INCREDIBLY good. Robben Ford-esque.

And he wants to jam with me.

Gads, though I'm pretty danged good, I'm 3 echelons below this cat. But seems like he actually likes my understanding of guitar, and gear, and tone, and theory.

I'm kinda psyched. Might even be able to parlay this into a gig. Or at least some lessons.

More importantly, bid one friend adieu, and made a new one.

T'was a good night.

I bought a couple of CDs of music from my early childhood. Those days, long ago, cold mornings, delivering my paper-route with a transistor radio rubber-banded to the handlebars. The songs alone breaking the solace of those 4 AM desolate mornings.

Wanted to remember those days, those feelings.

But....time has passed. Music will never be the same.

Now, I have a highly developed ear, a strong background in music theory, and have put together entire songs for so long.....I can't hear things with the innocence anymore.

I tried to just hear the songs, in their simplicity, but couldn't. Now I instinctively dissect the chord progression, the drum parts, the bass line, the horn parts, the guitar parts, the vocals, the mixing, the mastering.

This really sucks. I just want to hear the gestalt of the song.

But can't anymore. These songs are not the same as they were, a thousand years ago, on those cold, desolate, mornings....delivering papers to the sleeping masses.

Innocence lost.

Addendum: The craziest thing is.....that the fucking disco songs....stand the test of time the best. Those fuckers could lay the shit down! Maybe the songs were stupid, but the MF's could play! damn!

Fuck.
